Simplicity: While the look of your website is important, most users doesn’t only come to your site to analyze how polished the design is. Instead, they are coming to find some specific piece of information. Adding unnecessary design elements to your website make it tough for the users to achieve what they are trying to achieve. From a web designer perspective, simplicity is your best friend. Here are some of the way through which you can employ simplicity:

Visual Hierarchy: When it comes to optimizing for UX, the goal is to lead user to complete their desired action, but in a way that feels enjoyable. By adjusting the position, color, size of certain elements, you can structure your website in such a way that visitors will be taken away to those elements.

Navigability: Keeping an inherent navigation on your website is very important for establishing users can find what they are looking for. Preferably, a user should be able to visit your site and not think about where they should click next - moving from point A to point B should be effortless as possible.

  1. Keep the structure of your navigation simple
  2. Include navigation in the footer of your site
  3. Use breadcrumbs on every page
  4. Include search box near the top of your website so user can search by keywords
  5. Don’t offer too many navigation options
  6. Include links within your page, and make it clear where those links lead to

Consistency: in order to keep your website’s navigation consistent, the overall feel of your website should be consistent across all your site’s pages. Backgrounds, color schemes, typefaces, and even the style of your writing are the all major areas where being consistent can have a huge positive impact on UX.

Accessibility: This means invest your website structure that is highly flexible and responsive. With a responsive website, content is automatically resized and reshuffled to fit the dimensions of a particular devices.

Conventionality: There are certain conventions that have become familiar in past with the internet users.

  1. Having main navigation at the top or left side of a page
  2. Having logo at the top left or center of a page
  3. Having a logo clickable so it always brings back the user to the homepage
  4. Having links color/appearance change when you hover over them

Credibility: The best way to improve credibility is to be clear and honest about product/services you are selling on the website. Don’t make users to dig into so many pages to find out what it is you actually do. Instead, be up front about it.

User-Centricity: The key to improve the design of your website is to conduct user testing, gather feedback, and make changes based on what you have learned.
